ED REED QUINTET at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church
Ed Reed, who turned 83 on February 2, has pursued a most unconventional path to his present-day career. He was 78 when he released his recording debut, Ed Reed Sings Love Stories. He has placed in the "Male Vocals, Rising Star" category of the DownBeat Critics Poll in 2008, 2009, and 2011. His third release, Born to Be Blue, was an acclaimed DownBeat Editors Pick.
Ed's remarkable story is one of early promise thwarted by drug addiction. In high school Ed performed with "Little Esther" Phillips and Bobby Nunn of the Coasters. He learned to sing chord changes from his neighbor's little brother, then teenage bassist Charles Mingus. His professional career began in LA as a vocalist in a combo led by now-legendary trumpeter Dupree Bolton, but his addiction quickly undermined his innate talent. Ed spent more than a decade of his life behind bars for crimes related to heroin addiction, yet those years weren't entirely wasted, as he had the opportunity to rub shouldersand even performwith such jazz greats as Art Pepper, Dexter Gordon, Frank Morgan, and Frank Butler. Reed's is a story of the triumph of the human spirit over great adversity.
Reed has been clean and sober for over 25 years and is also a health educator working with addicts, alcoholics, and their families. In addition to his music, Ed has also launched a lecture series, The Art And Practice Of Living Well. "This work is as important to me as music. The lecture series has been a positive influence on hundreds of people. For me that work is all about joy and appreciation of our individual gifts".
Ed tours with:
Randy Porter (piano): An exceptional pianist whose grace and grit should win him many new friends. Listen!" - Chuck Berg
Anton Schwartz (tenor sax): You'd expect a brainiac like Schwartz to make brainy jazz, and indeed he does. What surprises are the upbeat vibe, strong melodies, and unflagging sense of swing that he brings to this music. -Ed Kopp, JAZZIZ Magazine
Jamie Fox (guitar): Elegant is not a word used very often to describe guitarists, but it fits Jamie Fox like a glove-an expensive driving glove. - Michael Ross, guitarplayer.com
Ugonna Okegwo (bass): UOniverse, bassist Ugonna Okegwo's first record as a leader, is a superior statement from a superior musician - Review from Jazzni
Willard Dyson (drums): Perfect, imaginative, sensitive, exciting and subtle, with a stunning flair for devastating funk." -The Wellington Journal
Tix: $20 advance / $25 door
