Kathryn Allyn: V is for Victory Disc: Doing it for Defense
Join Kathryn Allyn and Trio, led by jazz pianist and musical director Frank Ponzio, for an evening of WWII-era light jazz and swing:
During the war, the US Army waded into a musicians' strike to produce morale-boosting records for the troops. Ultimately, the great acts of the day  Hoagy, Louie, Glenn, Dinah, Peggy, Frank, Jo, Ella, Tommy, Martha, Betty, everybody who was anybody  laid down tracks for the Army. In all, the government recorded, pressed and shipped 8,000,000 records to soldiers scattered all over three continents. It's a great story, and the soundtrack to this story features many of the standards we know and love today, along with a selection of rarities which, thanks to the smuggling efforts of our soldiers and the preservation efforts of the Library of Congress, have not been lost to time.

Kathryn Allyn's most recent engagement was a successful pair of performances at Manhattan's Stage 72, of her set Playing Hard to Get. Her performance of WWII-era swing and blues, all out of print or virtually never heard, was met with, "Kathryn Allyn has the sort of smoky velvet soprano that sounds too natural, too unforced to have been operatically trained. In fact, there are many operatic credits to her name, but that hasn't cut her off from her Kansas City roots and the "dirty blues" that singers with big, far less perfect voices used to shout in the dives of that city Her program at the Triad of fine, forgotten tunes provides the sensuous pleasure of Jo Stafford, the moody nuance of Billie Holiday, the jazzy energy of Betty Hutton In an era that has forgotten the fun of double-entendres, she knows how to be subtle and sexy and musical all at one time."  John Yohalem, Parterre Box

With noted NYC jazz pianist Frank Ponzio at the helm and featuring Tom Hubbard (bass), Hayes Greenfield (sax) and Scott Neumann (drums), upcoming appearances include a return to Manhattan's Stage 72; in an exploration of a WWII's Victory Disc Program, she'll explore a fascinating moment in American popular music history, through story-telling and songs recorded for the Program by artists like Jo Stafford, Dinah Shore, Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday.

Kathryn's operatic credits include turns in the title role of Carmen at Florida Grand and Anchorage Operas, as well as leading roles with New York City Opera, Arizona Opera, Austin Lyric, Cleveland Opera, Des Moines Metro, El Paso Opera, Kalamazoo Symphony, New York Chamber Opera, Opera Orchestra New York, Opera Theater Northern Virginia, Palm Beach Opera, Sarasota Opera, Syracuse Opera and Virginia Opera. In concert repertoire, she has been heard with the Tokyo New City Symphony as Alto Soloist in Mahler's Symphony Nr. 2, and has appeared at Carnegie Hall on a number of occasions as Alto Soloist: Mozart's Requiem, Handel's Messiah, Beethoven's Symphony Nr. 9 and Vivaldi's Gloria.

Two Shows  July 25th and August 1st.
