Isabel Allende discusses her new novel "Maya's Notebook"
Tuesday, May 14th 7:30pm - Doors open at 6pm Kepler's Books 1010 El Camino Real Menlo Park, CA 94025
Neglected by her parents, 19-year-old Maya Nidal has grown up in a rambling old house in Berkeley with her grandparents. Her grandmother is a force of nature. Popo, Maya's grandfather, is an African American astronomer and professora gentle man whose solid, comforting presence helps calm the turbulence of Maya's adolescence.
When Popo dies of cancer, Maya goes completely off the rails. She turns to drugs, alcohol, and petty crime, a downward spiral that eventually bottoms out in Las Vegas. Her one chance for survival is her grandmother, who helps her escape to a remote island off the coast of Chile. Here Maya tries to make sense of the past, unravels mysterious truths about life and about her family, and embarks on her greatest adventure: the journey into her own soul.
Born in Peru and raised in Chile, Isabel Allende is the author of eight novels, including, most recently, Zorro, Portrait in Sepia, and Daughter of Fortune. She has also written a collection of stories; three memoirs, including My Invented Country and Paula; and a trilogy of children's novels. Her books have been translated into more than 27 languages and have become bestsellers across four continents. In 2004 she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She received the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award in 2012.
