Lara Downes, piano: Between Two Worlds - Music of Erich Wolfgang Korngold
Acclaimed pianist Lara Downes, well known to Portland audiences through her appearances at Portland Piano International, brings a very special concert of music by the great film composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold to Reed College. The program features a performance of Korngold's Sonata #2, composed in Vienna in 1910 when the composer was a 13-year-old prodigy. Premiered by the great pianist Artur Schnabel, who proclaimed it one of the greatest virtuoso works of the day, the Sonata has been largely forgotten until its recent revival by Downes, who features this magnificent work on her new album Exiles' Cafe.
This special event also features a conversation with Korngold's grand-daughter about her her grandfather's work, his miraculous escape from Hitler's Europe, and his exile in Hollywood.
