In "The Balcony", set amidst the riots of a revolution, Genet paints the picture of a brothel as a house of illusions. Illusions in the form of roles, in which the clients leave their mundane existence behind to engage in the powers of the aristocracy. A plumber becomes a bishop, a tramp becomes a judge, etc. With the aid of the brothels workers, the clients become actualized in their fantasy, engaging in the arts of sexual role play. Irma, the brothels madame, keeps her house under constant surveillance and forces her players into repressive self policing. She has them all exactly where she wants them. That is until the lines of reality and illusion dissolve into revolution!
The Phoenix Sanctuary is an Oakland based experimental theater company committed to the underground theatrical experience; seeking out works that are misunderstood, rare, and controversial, than producing them in dynamic and innovative ways. Submerse yourself in our subversive playground, as you step into the Grand Balcony and are swept up by revolution. Explore the arena and enjoy the fully submersive and interactive setting. Live feed projections will make it possible to see the play from anywhere in the space while you enjoy amenities such as a Kissing Booth, French Food, Bodywork, and Beer and Wine Bar, to name a few. You can also bring your smart phones and tablet devices to watch the play live as you explore the space.
