Cupid's New Weapons of Love

For your Valentine's Date 2013, what could be better than to join us as we present a ground breaking production, our modern première of the 1711 zarzuela "Cupid's New Weapons of Love." This international production, in  Dallas' new City Performance Hall, includes cast, directors and designers from Spain, Mexico and Argentina.

This show is the most significant production in our 24 year effort to present to the Dallas public the rich musical and theatrical history of Spanish and Hispanic heritage. Who knew that such fabulous theatrical works existed in Spain? But this show was part of the wildly popular theater scene in 1700s Madrid, premiered in the Teatro del Principe. Full of dance, comedy and all the rhythm we expect of Spain, and sets done just as they would have then (exclusively painted trompe l'oeil canvas), it's a discovery waiting to happen.  Nothing like this has been done, even in Spain, since the early 18th century!  Two shows, Valentine's Night, Feb. 14, and Saturday the 16th both at 7:30pm, with two children's shows on Friday the 15th.

This performance is a significant event in the history of Spanish staged productions. No other company has invested the effort and resources necessary to present a work of this nature in its original style. According to Gustavo Tambascio, the award-winning stage director of the operetta, "[This orchestra] is doing what no one in Spain is willing to do, that is to present  musico/theatrical repertory of Spain in a rich, authentic reproduction."  "Bring your obligatory Valentine's date!" says Grover Wilkins, who has been the music director of the Orchestra of New Spain which he founded 24 years ago.Wilkins and Tamascio have worked for more than two years to bring this unprecedented piece of baroque history to Dallas.

This is one of 8 zarzuelas, another name for Spanish musical comedy that Durón wrote and one of 3 of the 8 that has been transcribed into modern notation.  Durón (1660-1716) was organist for the Royal Chapel in Madrid and also leading zarzuela composer, who often collaborated with librettist José de Cañizares (1676-1750), the leading dramatist of the first half of the 18th century.

The plot of this comedy will appeal to people of all ages.  In this mythological story, the mischievous Cupid is stripped of his bow and arrow by Jupiter after protests from the people of Cyprus.  The disarmed Cupid seeks his revenge by joining forces with the goddess Diana.  Together they declare war with Jupiter and finally wins back Cupid's 'Arms of Love.'

The story of the Cupid's operetta comes from Roman mythology (text was written by Cañizares), but the music showcases the fabulous and dramatic theatrical tradition of European and Spanish heritage. The history of this zarzuela dates back to the 18th century when theater was wildly popular in Madrid.  "Cupid's New Weapons of Love" first premiered in 1711 at theTeatro del Principe, now called Teatro Espanol, the oldest functioning theatre in Spain.

This Dallas production will be produced much as it would have been produced in the 18thcentury with period dance, music, comedy, costumes, and staging for the first time since 1711.  The Orchestra of New Spain hopes to tour with the cast in Spain, the land from which this zarzuela originated. The great acoustics and the intimate size of the City Performance Hall are a perfect fit for this cast of dancers, singers and instrumentalists.

If you want to make your Valentine's day extra special for your loved ones or for yourself, this is the one thing you want to go to in Dallas.  Your date will never forget this unique and romantic Valentine's Day!
