Utilizing interviews with his friends and colleagues this documentary film about Nobel Prize winner Czeslaw Milosz is drawn against the background of American culture. Respected by fellow professors, admired by his students, Milosz was perceived as a lonely person. He spent evenings writing letters to himself that he would then mail. Alcohol was on of his problems. This documentary portrait of the poet conveys the unique point of view of his American literary and academic colleagues to which are added the recollections of his wife and his grandchildren.

Following the events of March 1968, communist authorities in Poland banned the publication of works by eminent philosopher and historian of ideas, Leszek Kolakowski and had him dismissed from his position at Warsaw University. He was quickly hired by Oxford University. After 37 years he returned to Warsaw to attend the anniversary celebration of the granting of his doctorate and to visit with old friends and old places.
