Broad Statements
Curated by contemporary feminist string quartet The Rhythm Method, Broad Statements is a celebration of female creativity spanning a wide variety of musical styles, from Venezuelan/Seattleian folk-punk of Yva Las Vegass to psychedelic cowboy soul, from contemporary experimental string quartet music to Carnatic vocal music-influenced free jazz. The event, hosted at The Cell Theatre in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, will consist of six 20-30 minute sets of music with short breaks in between. Between sets, we encourage you to mingle and meet the artists! Drinks and snacks will be available at the bar.
This event has been made possible through the generous support of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Creative Engagement Grant fund.

About the performers:

Praised for their uncompromising and unreserved . . . intense, and sensuously gestural performances (examiner.com), The Rhythm Method strives to reimagine the string quartet in a contemporary context. Since their founding in 2014, the group has given soulful, spirited performances in New York, Vienna, Paris, and Lucerne, and tackled works ranging from classics by Ligeti and Webern to newer works/premieres by Tonia Ko, Dai Fujikura, Andrew Norman, John Zorn, and other living composers, including members of the ensemble. Through a mixture of thoughtful programming, captivating performances, and collaborations with sound artists, visual artists, and songwriters as well as composers, they present concert experiences that engage and challenge their audiences.

With a heart - stopping voice & wide - ranging instrumental talent, Odetta Hartman carries cowboy soul into an era where country can clash with computers, and bluegrass isn't afraid of bass. Her debut LP 222 -- an experimental, bedroom-produced hybrid of folk, musique concrète and psychedelia -- was released on Northern Spy Records in 2015 to critical acclaim. Alongside her partner, sound artist and producer Jack Inslee, Odetta continues to explore the sonic vernacular created by their uncanny collaboration: badass banjos, detuned violins, field recordings, superstitious soundscapes, and vocal stylings ranging from sensual to spooky. Odetta's new album, Old Rockhounds Never Die, is set to be released on Northern Spy Records in early 2018.
