Kamuela Philharmonic St Valentine's Fundraising Concert
The Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO) is the Big Island's premier orchestra offering world-class classical music. The KPO promotes music education in Big Island schools and recognizes new talent in our annual concerto competition. All of KPO concerts are free; except for our annual St. Valentine's fundraising concert. The funds raised during our St. Valentine's concert are used to fund our free concerts and educational activities during the year.
This year, the KPO is holding its annual fundraiser at the beautiful Fairmont Orchid Resort in Waikoloa.
We are delighted to be working once again with the incomparable Grammy award winning John Keawe. John is a songwriter and slack-key guitarist who was born on the Big Island of Hawaii, in the little town of Hawi in North Kohala. John grew up with rock and roll music and enjoyed listening to singer/songwriters. After a four-year tour in the Navy, John returned to his home and was drawn to the sound of Hawaiian slack-key. He listened and watched and taught himself to play this style of music. Through the years, he has developed his own distinct style.
Dr. Madeline Schatz will conduct our St. Valentine's concert. Madeline founded the KPO nine years ago and serves as our conductor and music director. Born in New York, Dr. Schatz received most of her musical experience in Los Angeles. She received her Bachelor of Music (B.M.) and Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) degrees with high honors from the University of Southern California. She completed her Master of Music (M.M.) at Indiana University School of Music. She studied violin, viola and conducting with some of the finest teachers in the world. In addition to the Kamuela Philharmonic, Dr. Schatz has Conducted orchestras internationally, including the world famous London Symphony Orchestra (LSO). As a professional orchestral violinist/violist Dr. Schatz has played with leading orchestras across the globe. The fundraising concert, which begins at 6:00 pm in the hotel's Grand Ballroom, will feature light pupus and two beverages, plus a live and silent auction, as well as Keawe's Hawaiian "love songs" with a fabulous orchestral accompaniment. This will be Keawe's second performance with the orchestra, and like their debut concert last March, is an event fans will not want to miss.
