Live from Bloomingcamp Ranch: Johnny Irion and Sarah Lee Guthrie
Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion are a musical duo whose lineage is as impressive as their talents. Guthrie is the youngest daughter of folksinger Arlo Guthrie and the granddaughter of American icon Woody Guthrie. Johnny's songwriting grew of age thanks in large part to the mentoring of his uncle, Thomas Steinbeck, son of literary giant John Steinbeck. Sarah Lee and Johnny met through a mutual friend - Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes - while the two were working together in Los Angeles in 1999. They soon married, bringing together two of the most iconic American families of the 20th Century.
Their music combined Irion's love of rock and blues with Guthrie's roots of folk and country. They hit their stride on their 2013 album Wassaic Way, a collection of 11 new songs produced by Wilcos Jeff Tweedy and Patrick Sansone at the Loft in Chicago. It earned rave reviews and garnered Tweedy his first Grammy nomination as producer.
Guthrie and Irion have appeared at everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Newport Folk Festival, and on June 17th, they'll each perform an intimate set of righteous tunes for friends of Bloomingcamp Ranch as part of the Blackwing Sessions series.
