Alma de Mexico featuring Los Lupeños de San José
Alma de México is collage of dance and music illuminating the tapestry of Mexican celebratory tradition. Show times are 2:00 and 8:00PM at the Plaza Theater @ School of Arts and Culture, 1700 Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose. The concert marks the return of Dr. Susan Cashion, company co-founder, as Co-Artistic Director of the Lupeños with Marco Chavez, after an absence of thirty years.
The Lupeños will also perform dance suites from the states of Veracruz and Jalisco, as well as the famed Danza de los Viejitos from Pascuaro. All of these dance suites will be accompanied by the Mariachi Alegre directed by Esteban Zapiain, and el Conjunto Jarocho DíaPa'Son directed by Maria de la Rosa. Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol de San José State directed by Itza Sanchez and Los Lupeños Grupo Juvenil directed by Malena Vega, will also join in the celebration by presenting works from the north of Mexico, Tamaulipas and Chihuahua respectively.
Alma de Mexico will showcase two original works by Mexican choreographers, Ignacio Sanchez of Colima and Rene Arce of Guadalajara. Celebrating Mexico's vibrant cultural traditions from the Mexican states of Jalisco and Michoacan, these two works were made possible by grants from the Cashion Cultural Legacy Artist Exchange Scholarship and the James L. Knight Foundation.
Los Lupeños is a program of the Mexican Heritage Corporation, under the Artistic Directorship of the Cashion Cultural Legacy, Dr. Susan Cashion and Marco Chavez, Co-Directors.
