Wesley "Skip" Norris Memorial Jazz Festival
A concert honoring the life of Wesley Skip Norris will be held at 8:00 p.m. June 9, 2017 at the Northwest Activities Center, located at 18100 Meyers Road, Detroit Michigan 48235.  Proceeds from the concert will be given to the college fund of his daughter, Sarah Norris.  The fund is being administered by  the Hartford Memorial Baptist, where Skip served as trustee.
Skip Norris died on January 26, 2017 in Detroit.  A ferocious advocate of jazz and jazz musicians, many artists are coming to Detroit to celebrate his life.  
Linda Yohn from WEMU will host the evening.  To date, committed musicians are:  saxophonist Branford Marsalis, pianist Joey Calderazzo, vibraphonist Joe Locke, saxophonist JD Allen, vocalist Tammy McCann, Brazilian vocalist and guitarist, Nanny Assis , pianist Eric Reed, vocalist Jean Baylor and drummer Marcus Baylor, and saxophonist Victor Goines.  Musicians Gary Schunk, Ralphe Armstrong, and Bill Higgins will serve as the rhythm section for the evening.
Ticket prices are as follows:  VIP tickets are $100 which includes a pre-concert reception and meet and greet with the musicians and special seating.  The second tier of tickets is $40. There will be a CD signing of the various artists to which all concert goers are invited.
Skip Norris had a long and distinguished career as a concert presenter and artist manager. Skip brought a deep knowledge and affinity for the Jazz idiom and presented a myriad of Jazz artists including Nancy Wilson, Sonny Rollins, Branford Marsalis, and Chick Corea. As an artistic director, he  lead and curated a number of notable venues in Detroit including the historic Bakers Keyboard Lounge, the Jazz CafĂ© at the Music Hall for The Performing Arts Center, and Jazz at the Centre located in the Northwest Activities Center. He wrote a number of essays on the history of Jazz and its evolution on the world at large.  At his death, he was the Director of Booking for Gail Boyd Artist Management.
