FREE LAND w/Pigeon (short): SJFF 2008
13TH ANNUAL SEATTLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL
FREE LAND (Zone Libre) MOHAI: Thursday, April 10th, 5:00 PM (France, 2007, 104 min, French) Director: Christophe Malavoy Topics: Holocaust, Partisans, France, WWII, Family Relationships
Brimming with warmth and humor and richly photographed, Free Land is a delightful and distinctly French film about Jewish Partisans seeking refuge in the countryside during World War II. Pursued by advancing German forces, an extended family of five flees Nazi-occupied France and crosses the demarcation line into the "zone libre," or free zone, where they arrive at the farm of a peasant and patriot who shelters them in a barn. The ragtag group includes a very pregnant sister-in-law and the matriarch who only speaks Yiddish. Free Land is a film about cultural clashes, courage and cowardice that will transport you from laughter to tears. Based on the play by Jean-Claude Grumberg.
PIDGEON (short) (Canada, 2006, 11 min, English/German) Set during World War II and based on a true story, Pigeon recounts a rare and startling act of charity. Sumptuously shot and emotionally affecting, Anthony Greens short drama features Academy Award nominee Michael Lerner, and Canadian treasure Wendy Crewson.
