| Description |
13TH ANNUAL SEATTLE JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 2008
THE FIRST BASKET Cinerama: Sunday, April 6th, 5:15 PM (U.S.A., 2007, 86 min, English) Director: David Vyorst Topics: Basketball, Jews in Sports, Immigration, American Jewish Life, NYC/Lower East Side History, Archival Footage
Is basketball is the ultimate Jewish sport? The owners and managers certainly were. But what about the players and promoters? According to this documentary, it seems everybody was Jewish! The first NBA points were scored by guess who?: Jewish power-forward Ossie Schectman on November 1, 1946 as the New York Knicks beat the Toronto Huskies. This great film brings back all the names you remember and observes the role sports played in the immigrant experience and in weaving the fabric of the U.S. as we know it. Who knew (ver veyz).
JEWISH WOMEN IN AMERICAN SPORT (short) (U.S.A., 2007, 27 min, English) Director/Producer: Shuli Eshel Executive Producer/Historian: Dr. Linda J. Borish Topics: Women, Sports, Women Director, NYC/Lower East Side History
From the Settlement Houses to the Olympics, this short documentary captures the historic role Jewish women have played in shaping American sports.
