"Beauty as Threshold to the Divine Mystery" with Dr. Wendy Farley (presented by Companions on the Inner Way)
Spirituality Retreat: BEAUTY as THRESHOLD to the DIVINE MYSTERY This retreat will explore beauty as a way to open the heart for deeper intimacy with the Divine and deeper connection to all beings. We will use music, poetry, nature, and meditation as heart-opening thresholds to the profound peace and awakened compassion that life with The Beloved brings. Farley writes: "At this moment in human history, we are faced with very deep threats to human dignity and to the planet itself. Our hope, as Christians, to live in a way more conformed to the love of God for the world, is not easy to live out. It is easy to become discouraged, shut down or indifferent. This is why The Beloved constantly calls us toward practices and ways of life that contribute to our own and the worlds flourishing.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: Wendy Farley is the new Director of the Program in Christian Spirituality and Professor of Christian Spirituality at San Francisco Theological Seminary. She received her PhD from Vanderbilt University in 1988. Her teaching and research interests include women theologians, social justice, Buddhist-Christian dialogue, spirituality and contemplative practices. The author of several books on spirituality, her first book, Tragic Vision and Divine Compassion: A Contemporary Theodicy (Westminster John Knox, 1990) considers the problem of evil by focusing on suffering rather than sin and abandons the forensic model of God in favor of one emphasizing compassion as a dominant metaphor for the divine. Her latest book, The Thirst of God: Contemplating Gods Love with Three Women Mystics (Westminster John Knox 2015), explores the spirituality of medieval mystics Marguerite Porete, Mechthild of Magdeburg, and Julian of Norwich.
Format: Each day includes lecture and dialogue with Dr. Farley, small group community around spiritual reading; corporate and individual times of silence and contemplation; worship with Eucharist; and communing with God through movement, art, and nature.
