Booksmith Presents: Bookswap with Elizabeth McKenzie
Spring is almost sprung! This March, we have invited the incredible local author Elizabeth McKenzie to kick it off with us! Elizabeth's latest novel, The Portable Veblen, is an exuberant, one-of-a-kind novel about love and family, war and nature, new money and old values, and a very charismatic squirrel. It was also named named a Best Book of 2016 by NPR, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Guardian, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Kirkus, Elle, BookPage, and Largehearted Boy. +++ Bring an eccentric comedy. As long as you love it, bring it to Bookswap. You'll talk about it in groups and hear about the books that other people brought. We'll drink a bunch of free wine and beer and get to know our guest author. At the end, we'll have a big, rowdy, white elephant swap, and you'll leave with a new favorite (or ten). >>> Tickets are $10 and MUST BE purchased in advance. They do sell out! You can purchase them HERE. **** Admission includes an open bar, swag, and 20% off everything you buy that night.
"In scalpel-sharp prose, The Portable Veblen's gleefully perverse narrator seduces us with the story of a charming young woman soon to wed a handsome doctor. But strange shadows flicker just off the page and then begin to bleed into the story of the romance. The ethics of parenting, the disasters of war, corporate greed, the essential meanings of translation and invention, and the sacrifices of self to wedlock: these are some of the themes that surface in this extraordinary book. Oh, and also--what really is the soul of a squirrel? I was knocked out, giddily so, by The Portable Veblen." -- Nelly Reifler, author of Elect H. Mouse State Judge and See Through
