GIRLS!GIRLS?GIRLS.
Girls! Girls? Girls. is a hysterical provocative play in which Marjuan Canady transforms herself into ten diverse characters, capturing the voices and concerns of black women worldwide. Her characters range from the "booty" fashion mogul Sara Baartman to Black Women News anchor Beverly Brushetta to the hottest rapper in the game 40 Ounce. Inspired by New York City neighborhoods and people, this satire explores how we have looked at black women in the past, in the present and a funny yet frightening future. This satire critiques the power of the media, celebrity culture and challenges society's negative notions of black female identity. Rooted in the hip-hop theatre and feminist aesthetics, "Girls! Girls? Girls. " echoes issues of sexual exploitation, devaluation and misogyny in mainstream hip-hop. The audience follows the day of Briana Brushetta, daughter of media mogul, Beverly Brushetta, as she prepares for 40 Ounce's national hunt for his newest "Pussy Rim Chick" for his music video, "Pussy Rims". Along, the way, Briana encounters a set of individuals who are all affected by the black woman's identity. Beverly Brushetta says it best, "It's A Black Woman's Thang".
