DEL SOL DAYS
DEL SOL DAYS celebrates the Del Sol String Quartet's 20th Anniversary with a week long, collaborative series of performances and related events at Z Space in San Francisco. Highlighting Del Sol's focus on music by living composers that reflects the cultural diversity of our community, the Quartet will present three unique concerts of new music, conduct a workshop with local university composition students, and hold an open rehearsal of commissioned works by young and emerging composers from the Bay Area. The concert programs include the WORLD PREMIERES of four new works commissioned by Del Sol, NATIONAL and SAN FRANCISCO PREMIERES of other commissioned and recent works by such acclaimed composers as MASON BATES, KUI DONG, and GABRIELA LENA FRANK, and the stunning multimedia production "GARDEN" co-created by Del Sol with New Mexico based composer/video artist CHRIS JONAS. Some of Del Sol's favorite local musicians will join the Quartet on these concert programs, including ZOFO Duet--the 4-hands piano duo of Eva-Maria Zimmermann and Keisuke Nakagoshi--and didjeridu player Stephen Kent.
DEL SOL DAYS is made possible, in part, by generous support from the following institutions: Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, Fleishhacker Foundation, Clarence E. Heller Charitable Foundation, Grants for the Arts (San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund), The Amphion Foundation, Inc., William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: Tuesday, December 4, 7-9:15 PM -Composition Student Workshop with Del Sol & Gabriela Lena Frank:
Renowned composer Gabriela Lena Frank will lead a workshop with the Quartet and four student composers selected from leading university music programs across the Bay Area. The Quartet will play the students' works, with discussion led by Frank on compositional technique and process, string quartet writing, and the artistic collaboration between composers and performers. This workshop is FREE and open to the public, letting the audience see "inside-the-process" and participate in an interactive Q&A with Ms. Frank and the Quartet at the end of the session.
Wednesday, December 5, 4-6 PM & 8-10 PM -Open Rehearsals with Del Sol & Commissioned Composers Dylan Mattingly, Matt Cmiel, Lembit Beecher, as well as composer/video artist Chris Jonas:
These two open rehearsals will feature several brand new, commissioned pieces written for Del Sol's 20th Anniversary by young and emerging composers. The open rehearsals will show listeners how a new piece is brought to life and provide a sneak-preview of the composers' pieces and personalities before the world premieres on Friday and Saturday.
