A comic masterpiece in the Restoration style, The Rivals was first performed at Covent Garden in London in 1775. It was a favorite of the Royal Family and was George Washington's favorite play. It became a standard in the repertoire of English and American theatre companies throughout the 19th century.
It's now considered one of Sheridan's masterpieces and is credited with popularizing the term "malapropism".
