MARTHA - by Ellen Melaver, starring Christina Carlisi
"There are moments of magic when Carlisi  aided by Camille Loftins apt choreography and Derrick McDaniels lovely lighting design  seems to channel the spirit of Graham."
"When Carlisi elegantly tangles herself in a telephone cord revealing the magnificent geometry of Grahams technique or performs Grahams iconic shrouded solo Lamentation, the mood of these scenes shifts into an almost awe-inspiring register. Similarly, a serene sparkle comes into her eye as she pretends to cup in her hands the face of Erick Hawkins, Grahams one-time husband and dance partner."
"When graced with Melavers lyrical gems of Graham-like wisdom  If you give your body limits, suddenly you will see how limitless it is  Carlisis performance can be incandescent."
-LA Times

"Christina Carlisi - A Tour de Force as MARTHA!"
"Possesses all the creative elements, exquisitely combined, for a stunning one-woman show. Carlisi authentically communicates Ms. Graham's delicious and creative spirit via Melaver's clever, snappy-lined narratives."
"Brava, Ms. Christina Carlisi!!! Much deserved applause to all involved" - Broadway World

"A smart script by Ellen Melaver, Christina Carlisi brings Martha Graham vividly to life. Simply and elegantly produced, the play boasts excellence in both the direction by Stewart J. Zully and the choreography of Camille Loftin.  Martha is simply great theatre. See this show while you can." - Theatre Notes

"A must-see...wonderful opportunity to explore the inner workings of a clever, very funny, interesting woman who just happens to be a dancer. Supple and talented Christina Carlisi does a brilliant job" - LA Splash

"....a poignant and insightful play that artfully investigates the life and creative soul of...Martha Graham (1894-1991).  MARTHA is a one woman show featuring the very talented actor/dancer, Christina Carlisi."  "She gives a convincing portrayal of Martha Graham.  Through movement, Carlisi embodies the physical and personal sacrifices that Graham made for her art...." - See Dance News
----------------------------------------------------------------
A solo play, starring Christina Carlisi, about legendary pioneer of modern dance, Martha Graham. A fierce, witty, trailblazing feminist, who refused to let age define or confine her.

Martha Graham was an electrifying performer and a major artist of the twentieth century, who possessed a gift for revealing emotion through the dances she created...telling stories and expressing beliefs, the likes of which no one had ever seen.  She pursued her vision with unwavering dedication, in spite of the difficulties and challenges it brought to her life. Which were many.

The life of a dancer is usually very short.  In Martha Graham's case, she continued to dance into her seventies, because she simply refused to quit.  Martha, by Ellen Melaver, reveals the struggle an artist endures as the ravages of age can make continuing one's career difficult, and nearly impossible.  When is it time to say..."when."
