When Werther meets Charlotte, he falls instantly in love with her, but she is promised to another, whom she marries. When Werther returns, Charlotte decides too late that she also loves him. This unrequited affection and a relationship going wrong sets a resonant tone with everyone. The truly grand French opera is a magnificent musical and psychological exploration of romance, obsession and the desire for poetry.
