The Downtown Life Magazine introduces a new concert series at the Arts Center in Downtown Merced. The Gallery shows are intimate performances featuring local and touring songwriters.
Our inaugural Gallery Show will feature touring songwriters Matt Bauer and Garrett Pierce.
MATT BAUER (Crossbill Records) BIO: Matt Bauer grew up in Kentucky, and his music is rooted in the sounds and natural surroundings of the region. His melodies and banjo style bear the markings of traditional mountain music, bluegrass and early country, but his sound is distinctly contemporary. The lyrics live unflinchingly in the present and the arrangements draw on influences as varied as gamelan orchestras and post-rock. His latest record The Island Moved in the Storm, centers around the story of a young woman was found dead along a dirt road near Eagle Creek, north of Georgetown, Kentucky in 1968. For thirty years, she was known only as 'Tent Girl', the name given to her by the Kentucky Post & Times Star because she'd been found wrapped in canvas resembling a tent bag. This album is a series of overlapping narratives inspired by her story as re-imagined to incorporate imagery and locales from Bauer's rural Kentucky upbringing The places Bauer grew up in were the last places The Tent Girl, Barbara Anne Hackman Taylor, was seen before her disappearance. Matt Bauer now lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY. VIDEO: http://vimeo.com/26867830
GARRETT PIERCE (Crossbill Records) Garrett Pierce pens songs that peek into that same dark, yet optimistic place that Henry Miller and Leonard Cohen tapped into. His voice seems to soar alongside acoustic ballads or dirgey rock songs with the emotional confidence of someone who has found his path after years of yearning. Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, Garrett spent the last decade in San Francisco and Davis, CA where he delivered two full-length albums on Crossbill Records. The first, Like A Moth, was culled from stripped down sessions in basements, closets and the occasional studio. His second record, All Masks, was musically and technically more accomplished. Featuring lush strings, and cast of 10 musicians, it showcased his talents as both a composer and lyricist. There is no doubt that Garrett is special among the newer generation of songwriters. His dedication toward his craft, and his confessional and honest storytelling, make him among the great young talents in the Bay Area right now. VIDEO: http://vimeo.com/23281668
