Following sell-out performances at St Sophias Greek Orthodox Cathedral, London (November 2015) and Merton College, Oxford (February 2016), the Holst Singers, led by Stephen Layton, will give a performance of the splendid and iconic Rachmaninoffs All-night vigil in the beautiful Rochester Cathedral. All-night vigil, actually just an hour in duration and commonly known simply as his Vespers, was 100 years old in 2015.
The Holst Singers are no strangers to this stunning work, having performed it many times over the decades, nor to the extended Russian repertoire. Their albums of Russian and Eastern European music, Ikon (Hyperion, 1997) and the follow-up Ikon II (Hyperion, 2010), have received widespread critical acclaim. They also recorded Grechaninovs Vespers in 1998 to similar acclaim, and gave a five star-rated concert of music from Russia and Eastern Europe at The Temple Church, London in May 2014. See reviews here and here.
The combination of the Holst Singers expertise in performing Russian music, the centenary of the All-night vigils first performance, and the beauty of the performance venue will make this a memorable concert not to be missed.
