MOLLY NILSSON / ROSE MCDOWALL / HAPPY MEALS
MOLLY NILSSON Glasgow has become something of a second home for Berlin-based pop phenomenon Molly Nilsson. On the eve of the release of her last album, 2015s Zenith, she headlined the CCA to ecstatic effect and 2016s return promises more. Beginning in the mid 2000s by writing fragile, beautiful songs with limited means, Nilsson has evolved into one of the most pre-eminent pop stars in the underground. Put simply, Mollys songs speak directly to the heart, lift the spirit, bridge the divide in all humans, and are delivered with a restrained skill that is utterly disarming. An expert in minimalism, Nilsson strips experiences and feelings to their core values and presents each song like a call to arms for the worlds lovers and losers.
ROSE MCDOWALL Put simply, Rose McDowall is one of our favourite singer/songwriters of any era. Through different guises and bands, most notably Strawberry Switchblade and Sorrow, she has distilled a lifetime of emotion and process into songs that bridge hearts and minds. Rose McDowall has continued, in the aftermath of Sorrow, to expand her musical vocabulary, working with new musicians and seasoned players in the neb-folk, post industrial, experimental and pop worlds. In 2015, McDowall partnered with Glasgow-based Night School Records to re-issue Cut With The Cake Knife, a set of songs she recorded in the post-Strawberry Switchblade era with various musicians. Following its release, McDowall announced a full reissue series, with details to follow, and re-invigorated live tour schedules. Rose McDowall is currently working on new material and continues to work on her personal archive for future projects.
HAPPY MEALS Do you remember where you were when you first heard Happy Meals? Hopefully locked in an embrace, metaphorical or otherwise, with something or someone you love. Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook came into the world as Happy Meals in late 2014 as the leaves turned brown, a cascade of loving sunshine and acid-fried Italo-pop by way of Glasgow, but since then have travelled the globe, picked up a top ten finish in the Scottish Album Of The Year Award and most importantly worked on new emissions. Following the release of Fruit Juice in May 2016, the band have been preparing a new album for Night School in 2017, plus a new, off-shoot project for a new label release early 2017.
