DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS (Richard Oswald, 1919)
HISTORICAL RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION
The 1919 silent film DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS (German title: ANDERS ALS DIE ANDERN) is arguably the earliest surviving cinematic work made explicitly about LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender) people. Directed by Richard Oswald and co-written by famed psychologist Magnus Hirschfeld, it is believed to be the only film of a group of gay-friendly movies made during Germany's Weimar Era that escaped systematic destruction by the Nazis.
A 40-minute fragment discovered in the Ukraine is the only known element to have survived World War II. While the Filmmuseum München spearheaded a video preservation that pieced together film fragments, documents and photos, there has never been a restoration to film and a new negative created until now.
Outfest and UCLA are proud to reintroduce DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS to the world. This centerpiece screening with a live accompaniment will be the first time in almost 100 years that the director's vision will presented to an audience in 35mm. The Legacy Project is proud to present a sneak-peek at this substantial restoration effort.
The restoration of DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS is without question the Legacy Project's most ambitious and our most important project to date. Following the restoration Sneak Preview, we will create educational kits for 35mm screenings and DVD dissemination to college campuses. When completed, all elements will be archived as part of the Legacy Project Collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive.

ABOUT THE LEGACY PROJECT The Outfest Legacy Project for LGBT Film Preservation, a partnership between Outfest and UCLA Film & Television Archive, is the only program in the world dedicated to saving and protecting LGBT moving images.
Many of the landmark lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) films produced over the last 40 years are already in danger of fading away their original exhibition prints in tatters, their negatives in woeful storage conditions or even lost.
The Legacy Project has restored 18 films, creates educational programming and has built the largest collection of LGBT moving images in the world over 20,000 items, including historical footage of the first gay pride parade in Los Angeles, home movies of gay bars from the 1950s, and much more.
We must not be complicit in the erasure of our lives and our history. We need to intervene now, and we need your help.
