FALL FOLK FEST featuring: SHOOK TWINS, Buster Blue, & Grandma Kelsey
FALL FOLK FEST
SHOOK TWINS, Buster Blue, & Grandma Kelsey
Friday, October 19th, 2012 @ 7:30PM
Prepare yourself for an enchanted evening filled with phenomenal folk music, an array of works by local artists, food and spirits.  The Fall Folk Fest features live entertainment by Shook Twins, Buster Blue, and Grandma Kelsey.  Folks of all types will feast their eyes and ears in celebration of the season.
Identical twins Laurie Shook (vocals, banjo, percussion and beatboxing) and Katelyn Shook (vocals, guitar and mandolin), are two thirds of the quirky folk trio, Shook Twins. Rounding out the trio is Kyle Volkman on bass. The Shook Twins intertwine gorgeous "twin" harmonies with an eclectic and eccentric blend of folk, roots, pop and fun. Originally from Sandpoint Idaho, the twins have been making music together since childhood. Playful, warm and lighthearted, a Shook Twins show percolates with the twin's infectious radiant energy. Pristine vocals layered on top of traditional stringed folk instruments, create lovely aural imagery of two women with one sound.
Shook Twins are not your average folk trio. Laurie may drop a beatbox in the middle of a song, while Katelyn plays the guitar, glockenspiel, mandolin, and sings into a telephone and bocks like a chicken. Laurie plays wah-wah Banjo and loops various melodies and beats to make it sound like more than just two identical twin sisters. Meanwhile Kyle lays down the groove adding resonant bass lines to the mix. It's a refreshing romp filled with unexpected surprises. This past year the Shook Twins have been touring behind their sophomore CD "Window" released in April 2011, taking them throughout much of the Northwest & beyond. Along the way, The Shook Twins have shared the stage with artists including: Ryan Adams, Mason Jennings, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Trace Bundy, Laura Veirs, The Fruit Bats, Jonatha Brooke, Michelle Shocked, JJ Grey and MoFro, Crooked Still, Jason Webley, The BoDeans, Elephant Revival, The Head and The Heart and many more.  Shook Twins have performed at major festivals including Northwest String Summit, Oregon Country Fair, and more local events such as the Sawtooth Music Festival.
Performing in support of Shook Twins at the Fall Folk Fest is Reno based Buster Blue and local singer songwriter Grandma Kelsey.  Throughout their tours of the NorthWest, Buster Blue has performed at the inaugural Treefort Music Fest, Liquid Lounge, Visual Arts Collective, and the 89.9FM RadioBoise.org pre-Tour de Fat Block Party on 8th St.  The band is comprised of five band members, most of whom alternate through an arsenal of instruments that includes banjo, accordion, trumpet, trombone, chain-links and more, along with the traditional guitar/bass/drums combo.  With a megaphone and a driving beat, audiences chant along "rise up" and move their feet.  Buster Blue has performed with artists including: Margot and the Nuclear So & So's, the Devil Makes Three, Jason Webley, Langhorne Slim, O'Death T-Model Ford, The Dexter Romweber Duo, Norfolk & Western, Magnolia Electric Co, Justin Gordon, Jaguar Love, David Vandervelde, Rocky Votolato, El Olio Wolof, Jason Anderson, The Deadly Syndrome, Bob Log III, Golden Boots, Rademacher, and The Pharmacy.
Don't let her name deceive you, Boise artist Kelsey Swope, aka Grandma Kelsey.  A solitary, wingless creature armed with autoharp, guitar, and song, Grandma Kelsey's disarming voice blends poetic narratives and structured melodies that draws the hearts of her listeners. It is rare to feel alone in a room full of people, but one can not help feeling singled out by her sincerity.
Every live music and art lover will be dazzled by the sights and sounds at the Fall Folk Fest, Friday, October 19th,  2012 at the Visual Arts Collective (VaC) 3638 Osage St, Boise, ID.  Doors open at 7:30PM and music starts at 8PM.  Admission is $13 at the door or only $10 advance.  Watch artist videos and purchase advanced tickets online at www.TOentertaoU.com or from the box office at the Record Exchange.
