"When I studied composition in the late 1950s, my teachers were complaining about the lack of performance opportunities for new scores. Then I encountered John Cage, who composed and performed his own music and that of others...He was a great inspiration]. Who knows where would all of us be without his example?" -- Alvin Lucier
The FLUX Quartet – known for its performances and six-hour recording of Morton Feldman’s String Quartet No. 2 – performs contemporaries of John Cage. Musical associations among the composers are apparent, even in Luigi Nono’s Fragmente – Stille. An Diotima, that marks a radical departure from the prevailing European concept of time and sound. Violinist Tom Chiu founded FLUX in 1990s, inspired by the all-embracing philosophy of “anything-goes, do-it-yourself” as expressed by Fluxus artists.
