"Glowing and Radiant": Dvorak's Sixth
The different instrumental groups of the orchestra are spotlighted in the concert's first half: a fanfare for brass (Dukas), a symphony for wind instruments (Gounod), a delectable suite for strings (Holst), and a remarkable vehicle for solo marimba (Hovhaness). The orchestra is "reassembled" after intermission for Antonin Dvorak's festive and enchanting Symphony No. 6. Matthew Kocmieroski is the virtuoso marimba soloist in Alan Hovhaness' haunting Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints.
