Requiem for a Friday Night by Gérman Rozenmacher Rehearsed Reading
Requiem for a Friday Night (Requiem para un viernes a la noche) is a heart-breaking auto-biographical play about a father-son relationship that self-destructs within the context of a family trying to maintain their post-Holocaust Jewish identity in 1970s Buenos Aires.
Moving, tender and nostalgic, it could be described as an Argentine cross between Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie and John Osbourne's The Entertainer. Written by Gérman Rozenmacher in Argentina in 1967, it continues to be produced regularly across Latin America but has never been performed in this country.
This is a reading of a first draft translation by Daniel Goldman with a view to development towards a full production.
We'll also have a Post-reading conversation with Daniel Goldman and Professor Catherine Boyle.
And to keep the tradition going we'll have music, drinks and much more to enjoy the Latin American theatre experience!

About Gérman Rozenmacher
Gérman Rozenmacher was an Argentine playwright known for his narrative related to solitude, discrimination and social-politic preoccupations. His tale "Cabecita Negra" is a classic of he Argentine literature.
The Ricardo Rojas cultual centre created the Germán Rozenmacher award in 1999 to recognise young playwrights.
About Catherine Boyle
Catherine Boyle is Professor of Latin American Cultural Studies at King's College London. She is co-director of the AHRC-funded theatre translation project, Out of the Wings. She has published widely on Latin American theatre and performance. This translation of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz's Los empeños de una casa, as House of Desires, was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in their renowned Spanish Golden Age season (2004), and has been widely performed since then. Most recently Catherine Boyle has formed the Head for Heights Theatre Company, whose first production, Las brutas / Beasts by Juan Radrigán (Chile) and directed by Sue Dunderdale, was premiered at Theatre 503 in 2011.
About Daniel Goldman
Daniel Goldman is an award-winning theatre director, playwright, teacher and producer. As Artistic Director of Tangram Theatre Company, he has directed nine shows including Richard III (Better Bankside Shakespeare Award), Fuente Ovejuna (Nominated for Best Show and Best Director - Off West End Awards) and The Origin of Species (Nominated for Best Show at the Adelaide Fringe Festival). Freelance Directing includes the Merry Wives of Windsor at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and You're Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy at the Bush (Winner of the Stage Award for Best Solo Performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival). As a writer, his plays include Crunch! (Nominated for a Total Theatre Award) and new translations of Almost 10, Fuente Ovejuna and Mother Courage. As a teacher, Daniel regularly works in theatre schools across the UK as well as internationally in India and Kenya. Finally, Daniel is also the founder and Artistic Director of CASA Latin American Theatre Festival, the UK's biggest celebration of Latin American theatre and theatre makers which takes place in London every autumn.
