Join a community of people who use music, dance, storytelling and poetry to promote progressive ideas and transform ourselves and our communities to bring about a better world. This daylong event (9:45 am - 6:00 pm) will take place at the Edward A. Reynolds West Side High School, 140 West 102nd Street (near Amsterdam Avenue), New York City.
All workshops will be fully participatory. Bring your voices, instruments and songs to share. The Local Gathering will offer more than a dozen opportunities to meet, learn about, and network with New York area progressive arts and social change groups.
The full-day schedule includes an introduction to the People's Music Network, a national organization whose mission is to engage a diverse community of singers, artists, activists and allies to cultivate music and cultural work as catalysts for a just and peaceful world. (10:15 am - 11:00 am).
Three workshopping sessions with four options each (11:15 am - 4:45 pm) will introduce co-sponsors Peoples' Voice Cafe, Folk Music Society of New York, Brooklyn Women's Chorus, El Taller Latino Americano, Walkabout Clearwater Chorus, and Urban Art Beat.
We'll take a lunch break (lunch on your own) from 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm, encouraging informal networking among participants over a meal.
We'll close with an hour-long session (5:00 pm - 6:00 pm) titled "Moving Forward," to consider future networking, participatory events, and other options.
