Langston Hughes is one of the essential figures in American literature. He was outspoken, down-to-earth, and delighting in the cadences in the diction of Black song and speech. His vision of America was in many ways as timely today as in the decades in which his poems were written. The joy in his poems reflect the rhythms and the spark of a people, a neighborhood, a city, a country. Rooted in the black experience, his poems are driven by the same urge that inspired the other great poets of our time. This show, presented by the small but mighty Urban Spectrum Theatre Company, now in its 42nd year of producing quality, accessible entertainment for the inner city, celebrates Langston Hughes through pre-recorded, pre-written, and newly-inspired music. Under the direction of Ms. Judy Cooper Lyle, the choreography of Florence Lyle, and music direction of Joe Shad, and featuring the vocal stylings of Ms. Pippi Ardennia and Heather McElrath.
