Jonny Woo's East London Lecture
'In 1995, in a pub called the Bricklayers Arms, in Shoreditch, the world began.
Jonny Woo gently explores the topic of contemporary gentrification in his verbatim show about Shoreditch in East London in the mid 1990s. This is a familiar tale of 20 some-things descending on an urban area in decline and celebrating the last hurrah of irresponsible youth with consequences, both for the area they found and for themselves. Part lecture, part musical and part immersive theatre, Jonny uses text from interviews with his friends from the time, artists, new comers and a local resident called Jim, to explore this moment which has become a bench mark for urban renewal. Lively, unexpected and thoroughly entertaining, Jonny Woos East London Lecture is a life affirming look at urban change, our notion of community and an assertion that we all contribute to the development of our urban landscape no matter how superficial or transient such moments may seem at the time.
If anyone is qualified to give a lecture on the first wave of Shoreditch hipster culture its Jonny Woo The Guardian
