Malinda LaVelle's Project Thrust presents "Cover Girl"
Choreographed by Malinda LaVelle and performed by Emmaly Wiederholt, "Cover Girl" marks Project Thrust's fifth original evening-length work. A one woman dance-theater performance, the piece susses out declarations of fraud, dreams of gratification, and the facades people often put on for themselves and for others. "Cover Girl" was created by Malinda and Emmaly during a week-long residency at the Peñasco Theatre in New Mexico, and is based off of material and research from ten of Project Thrust's dancers who are currently spread out across the world.

The Choreographer:
Malinda LaVelle is an alumna of the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in Dance from the University of Arizona. She is the founding artistic director of Project Thrust. Established in 2010 in San Francisco, the company's work has been presented in Ben Levys Salon, in CounterPULSEs 2nd Sundays, in the Women on Way Festival, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, in The Garage's RAW Program, at ODC Theater, and at Z Space. Malinda has been commissioned to choreograph by the University of San Francisco, and has been awarded grants from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, Theater Bay Area (CA$H), and the ODC Kenneth Rainin Scholarship Fund. In 2012, Malinda developed "Jam Class" at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, which has been featured in Dance Magazine and has been taught regularly in the training program at SFCD. While living in San Francisco, Malinda performed with Alex Ketley, Manuelito Biag, Alyce Finwall, and she was awarded two Isadora Duncan Awards for her work performing with Alex Ketleys The Foundry. In 2014, Project Thrusts work Kingdom was nominated for an Isadora Duncan Award in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Performance for a Company. Malinda is a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and has been and artist in residence at SFCD with Project Thrust since 2010. Malinda currently lives in Durango, Colorado where she teaches a movement class at the Southwest Safehouse and is a faculty member at Ballet Durango. She has performed in the Durango Art Center's 10 minute play festival and in 2016, Malinda participated in a week long residency at The Peñasco Theater in New Mexico.

The Performer:
Stance on Dances editor, Emmaly Wiederholt, is a dancer and writer based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She received her MA in Arts Journalism from the University of Southern California and her BFA in Ballet and BS in Political Science from the University of Utah. She further trained at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and has performed extensively around the Bay Area. She is a founding member of Malinda LaVelles dance theater company, Project Thrust. Emmaly has contributed regularly to the San Francisco Bay Guardian, In Dance, Caring Magazine, Cue Newspaper at the South Africa National Arts Festival, the Santa Fe Reporter and, of course, Stance on Dance, which she founded in March 2012. She currently works as the editor of Fine Lifestyles Santa Fe Magazine, and dances every second shes not writing.

The Contributors:
Special recognition goes to Angela Mazziotta, Carson Stein, Emily Jones, Emmaly Wiederholt, Eric Garcia, Joy Prendergast, Julia Hollas, Kelvin Vu, Maggie Stack, and Madelyn Biven. All ten of these brilliant Project Thrust dancers contributed amazing and thought-provoking research which fueled the development of "Cover Girl." Their blood runs in the piece!
