John Adams's celebrated Short Ride in a Fast Machine gives us a hint of the composer's exhilarating experience of riding "in a terrific sports car". Continuing her multiple collaborations with Maestro Baldini, 19-year-old virtuosa Alina Kobialka returns to Sacramento with a not-to-be-missed performance of Sibelius's powerful Violin Concerto. The big piece on the program is a show stopper: Tchaikovsky's celebrated 5th Symphony, with its affirmative "ultimate victory through strife".
