The Original Dirigible
SparklingSpats Productions Proudly Presents:
THE ORIGINAL DIRIGIBLE
-A GhettoSwing Soiree-

Look! Up in the sky! The Original Dirigible takes flight over Portland this July 7th at the Refuge.  Jetsetting DJs from Portland and abroad drop the shuffle-and-bass alongside live swing musicians in a party laboratory of steampunk splendor and chrononaut chaos!

GhettoSwing comes to Portland!
This bass-heavy danceclub cousin of Europe's reigning ElectroSwing craze is packing clubs from Zurich to Sicily. Like the gold-grilled, hard-stomping cousin of Caravan Palace, Defunk is flying in from Calgary to mark the Rose City's initiation into GhettoSwing alongside our own International selector sensation GlobalRuckus.

On the early shift, seven-piece swing band The Wanderlust Circus Orchestra blends their vintage sound with live dubs by Patrick Mellon, an experiment in rhythm that spans a century.

There will be interactive artistic alchemy - control the lights and visuals in our very own dancecage dirigible. This is more than one's standard soiree, it's a night of glittery, glamorous grandiosity - a fully immersive futuristic steamtopia awaits.

Don't miss the blimp! Get your tickets today at Brown Paper Tickets and climb aboard for the flight of your life!

||Defunk||
(Calgary/Alkatraz/High Chai Recordings)
Some say the name Defunk alludes to the removing and de-construction of the elements of funk, creating something quite the opposite such as the likes of glitch or uniquely formed beats. Others say the name implies the use of a funk structure, incorporating bouncing bass and fast paced drum rhythms. Any way you try to interpret this Canadian bass producers name, it would be wrong. And right at the same time.

Defunk has a style unto his own. Shortly put, imagine Egyptian tribal sounds, infused with glitch hop speed and unpredictability, with drumstep's unrelenting force and smashing sub. Defunk creates everything from dirty bellydance and slow, sexy tribal fusion, to grime ridden drumstep, and James Brown styled ghetto funk. He plays and produces whatever he is feeling, but you can usually guarantee it's got a little bit of a foreign spice to it.

||GlobalRuckus||
(pdx / Ruckus World / SparklingSpats)
Spinning world beats at parties since the early 90s, and in particular at Burning Man since 1998 with the Pyromid, Dustfish and the Hookah Dome, GlobalRuckus has never been afraid to play songs that fall far outside of what people expect to hear from DJs. Favoring high energy world party music or perhaps the type of music you'd hear at traditional weddings around the world, he works the dance floor into a frenzy playing klezmer, Balkan, calypso, New Orleans brass band, mariachi, bhangra, cumbia, Arabic hip hop, Asian baile funk, and more. His ever growing music collection now includes a variety of cross-cultural mashups and remixes of traditional tunes that have left audiences sweaty and exhausted around the globe, including Mexico, Nepal, Tibet, Turkey and Switzerland and in the last year he's played on 5 continents including gigs in Johannesburg, Sydney, London's Electro-Swing Club, Holland, Shanghai and Beijing. As a Portland ambassador of global beats he also hosts touring international sound DJs and producers at events in Portland, including dunkelbunt, Max Pashm, Gypsy Sound System, Filastine and more. Bring your dancing shoes!

||Manoj||
(pdx / Uplift / Curve)
Manoj emerged in 1991 as one of the pioneering event producers in the NW electronic dance culture. Producing a multitude of successful gatherings in Portland, Eugene and Seattle, he initially became known for his unique style of events that were associated with inspirational experiences for the attendees.

In 1997, feeling that there was something missing in the sounds he was hearing from the dancefloor, Manoj trained himself to dj on turntables and soon after established himself as a well-respected dj. Feeling the limitations of playing records, he excitedly embraced the new digital age of music and its respective technologies. With these new resources at his command, Manoj is now bridging musical worlds and expanding beyond any single limited definition of sound.

Mr. Wu is a DJ, designer, promoter, screen printer, ninja holding it down on the Westcoast. Find him mixing music and slangin' shirts all over Oregon and beyond.
