Kevin Locke - Lakota Dancer and Indigenous Flute Player
Locke is Lakota, from the Hunkpapa Band of Lakota Sioux, and Anishinabe. Growing

up on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, he learned from his

elders  including his mother, a 1991 MacArthur Foundation Grant winner for her

work to preserve tribal languages  the values and traditions of his people. His long

career has been devoted to serving as a cultural ambassador through storytelling,

music and dance.


The colorful hoop dance employs 28 hoops, usually wooden, that twirl and

intertwine to form images representing the changing seasons  flowers, butterflies,

the sun and moon, for example. It is described as complex and acrobatic. Locke

will combine storytelling with his performance, a craft he is also noted for.


The fancy dance is often performed at Native American powwows around the country.

For years, Magruder has taken his dance history students to Monacan or

Chickahominy powwows.
