Since 1950, this award has been given has been given to individuals and organizations, whose dedication and service to our community promotes respect, understanding, and tolerance among all people. Humanitarian honorees envision a world where all human beings are of full and equal worth, live in safe, sustainable communities and are able to enjoy the full range of life's benefits.
Lauren K. Weinberg served for thirteen years (1980 1993) as the Executive Director of the Bluegrass Region of the National Conference for Community and Justice, which became the Kentucky Conference for Community and Justice and eventually the Plantory. Lauren worked tirelessly to destroy the barriers that separate and divide us, such as race, religion, culture and ethnicity. She demonstrated in her personal and professional life a deep understanding and concern for others, looking beyond the surface of a person to see both the individual's uniqueness and what they held in common with others. Lauren developed, implemented and administered highly effective and publicly acclaimed youth programs. The Humanitarian Awards and the ongoing work of our organization continue Lauren's legacy of community inclusiveness and collaboration.
