Produced by Latino Theatre Projects in Association with Theatre off Jackson
TICKET PRICES $15 General Admission $10 Seniors & Students
SHOW DESCRIPTION Mariela in the Desert is a prize-winning play by celebrated Latina playwright Karen Zacarias. This story weaves a complex tale with a gripping mystery that reveals what happens to a family when one's creativity is shut away.
Mariela and José were once the golden couple of an elite circle of artists in Mexico City. Together they relocated to the rugged, dry terrain of Northern Mexico with their family to build an artist colony hoping to host friends such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and Rufino Tamayo. But with their daughter gone and their friends too famous to call, Mariela and José find themselves trapped in an isolated existence and the withering of their creativity and artistic inspiration. They are haunted by the ghost of a young son who holds the key to the family's long-buried secret.
Mariela and José are forced to confront their past when their estranged daughter visits with her Jewish-American boyfriend.
