Hot Jazz, Blues, and Swing
An evening of swing and hot jazz with both Josh Roberts' sextet and his ten-piece orchestra, as well as opening sets by the VCC Jazz Orchestra and the VCC Pre-bop Band, both under the direction of Alan Matheson.

JOSH ROBERTS' BANDS
Josh's sextet plays the dynamic, swinging music of 1940s-era small group jazz. Influenced by the Benny Goodman Sextet and Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five, among others, the group features a unique blend of simple, catchy swing riffs, driving rhythms, and tight ensemble arrangements. Josh Roberts (guitar) will be joined by Bonnie Northgraves (trumpet), Ben Henriques (reeds), Jens Erik Christiansen (reeds), Wynston Minckler (bass), and Nicholas James (drums).
His ten-piece band will feature an augmented horn section, including Adrian Smith (trumpet), playing swinging arrangements in the style of thirties and forties big band music of Jimmie Lunceford, Chick Webb, Count Basie and more.
VCC BANDS
"Pre-Bop" Jazz Ensemble
The VCC "Pre-Bop" Jazz Ensemble specializes in performing swinging jazz from the 1920s to the 1940s. Founded in 2000, this group plays classic repertoire composed or made famous by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington and Bix Beiderbecke. The band also plays original arrangements by members of the group and have a wonderful "little big band" sound that appeals to dancers and listeners alike.
Jazz Orchestra
This ensemble was founded in 1974 by the legendary trombonist/arranger Dave Robbins and has continued the tradition Mr. Robbins established by playing a wide variety of music from classics from the Swing Era to original compositions written by band members and alumni. Rob McKenzie, Fred Stride and Craig Scott are among the many notable alumni of the VCC Jazz Orchestra and the current edition of the band features current students alongside of alumni and professional jazz musicians.
