Doris Johnson has had it easy for most of her life living at home with her mother. Unfortunately her rocky relationship with her husband Biggie has led her down a road she never could have expected. Biggie's addiction to drugs has taken a toll on everyone around him including Doris. They both agree that treatment for Biggie is the only alternative, however, that decision would be short lived.

Our story begins when Biggie learns of the untimely death of his mother-in-law and decides to make an unwelcome return visit home before completion of the program. His wife Doris and her deeply rooted hate for her rich sister Penny doesn't make things any better. Things really hit the fan when Doris and Biggie are forced to ask Penny for help because there's no insurance money to bury their mother.

Meanwhile homelessness takes a toll on the streets of Detroit for Mildred, the bag lady who has no home, no hope and no self esteem. Shunned by everyone who comes in contact with her, she is an eyesore to the community around her and a constant reminder of those less fortunate.

But an old dirty homeless man named Spare Change who pushes a cart full of his life belongings seems to be different from all the rest. In spite of his circumstances he appears to have more to give in the way of hope than anyone could've imagined. His determination to see the light at the end of the tunnel becomes an example to the world of what it means to have hope. The light that shines through him makes us all re-examine ourselves and our own lives. His life becomes a true testament of gratitude.
