As I Roved Out: Songs of Spring
Hanz Araki and Kathryn Claire, joined by special guest artists, musicians, and dancers are proud to present a series of unprecedented Celtic concerts. These entertainers and performers lend their individual expertise, lyrical knowledge and talents to four, theme-based concerts that present some of the most beautiful elements of the Celtic tradition.
"Each of us bring to the table a varied collection of songs and stories that reflect the same themes of longing, love, loss, beauty, and celebration. These concerts give us the freedom to explore some of these experiences thoroughly through the music that has arisen from the last several hundred years of human existence," said Araki, the show's creator.
As I Roved Out: Songs of Spring, the first concert of the series, is a musical collection sure to welcome better weather as the long winter nears its close. Love songs, jigs and reels from across the Atlantic evoke the green fields and meadows; the penny whistle and fiddle echo the song birds with this sprightly, time-honored music.
About the Artists:
Irish flute player and singer Hanz Araki is the quintessential world music musician. He has performed around the world with the Juno Award-winning Paperboys, Casey Neill and an all-star tribute to The Pogues called "K.M.R.I.A." He has played with the Seattle Symphony, the University of Washington Wind Ensemble and is featured on more than a dozen recordings and soundtracks, from feature films and documentaries to popular video games.
While he may be known these days for his playing and singing of Irish music, his deep roots are in the shakuhachi, the traditional bamboo "Zen flute" of Japan. Hanz (short for Hanzaburo) is the world's only sixth generation shakuhachi player, following in the footsteps of his father (Kinko Ryu Grand Master Kodo Araki V). With no prior musical training, Hanz took up the shakuhachi at age 17. Four months later, under his father's tutelage, he made his concert debut in Shimoneski, Japan. He went on to teach shakuhachi at Keio University for two years before moving back to his hometown of Seattle in 1991.
There, his American mother's Gaelic roots came into play. He began teaching himself Irish and Scottish tunes on the flute and penny-whistle, inspired by the many excellent pipers and fiddlers in Seattle. His ability on the flute and his uncanny command of traditional songs with his voice quickly made him a fixture of the Irish music scene in America.
Kathryn Claire has asserted herself in a new generation of traditionally-inspired musicians. Her violin-playing exhibits a technical grace which is matched only by her truly captivating voice. She possesses the rare ability to move seamlessly across genres. Her deep love and respect for traditional music has long been a driving influence, and those roots can be heard in every aspect of her performance.
