Thursday 5th July 2012 at 7.30pm

Music in Prisons (MIP) presents an evening of superb and diverse music.

Acclaimed contemporary composer Mark-Anthony Turnage kicks things off, introducing Beyond This, a film of his collaboration with MIP and men at HMP Lowdham Grange  a New Music 20x12 commission as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Celebrations. Beyond This is a stunning testimony to the hidden creative potential within our prisons, comprised of four-movements, encompassing choral, contemporary, rap and pop influences, running a gauntlet of emotion as the prisoner-performers contemplate on life "beyond these walls".

Next is the launch of Sounding Out, MIP's pilot "through the gate" programme working with ex-prisoners who MIP first met in custody; a newly-formed band will perform an exciting set of original music. Sounding Out will not only further develop participants' musical skills, but also take them on to access additional training opportunities and work placements as positive role models on our Making Tracks community-based projects with young people at risk of offending.

The evening will end with a serious swing as the fabulous globe-trotting Neil Cowley Trio (featuring MIP project leader Rex on double-bass) take to the stage, wooing the audience and breaking new ground with their unique, delightful jazz explorations.

About Music in Prisons:
MIP has been delivering creative music projects in prisons throughout the UK for over 16 years and we are now also taking our considerable expertise in working in custody out into the community, inspiring and supporting even more people to reach their full potential through music-making. Full details about our vital work can be found at our website, www.musicinprisons.org.uk
