Growing with a Purpose: Building a Community Garden
EVENT CANCELLED! Unfortunately, something has come up that prevents our speaker from joining us on Wednesday evening. At this time, there are no plans to reschedule the talk.
With all the emphasis on eating healthy and local, many neighborhoods and communities get together to develop community gardens to feed themselves and nearby food bank patrons. Unfortunately, as with many good intentions, these gardens aren't always as successful as they could be and it can become a struggle to attract enough volunteers to keep things going year after year.
One community garden bucking that trend is the Community Garden at Bethany Covenant Church in Mount Vernon, WA. Under the guidance of Dr. Andy Anderson, the garden has just completed its ninth successful season.
The Growing Groceries program is proud to present an engaging evening with Dr. Anderson, Wednesday, March 30, 2016 7:00-9:00 pm, to hear him speak on Growing with a Purpose: Building a Community Garden. Location is WSU Snohomish County Extension's Cougar Auditorium in McCollum Park, 600 128th St SE, Everett, WA.
Over the years, Dr. Anderson and a loyal group of volunteers have expanded the garden to include 3,300 sq. ft of raised beds with trickle irrigation and an injection fertilizer system. Other features include a 20'x12' greenhouse, tool shed, and a covered tomato growing shelter. In addition to supplying vegetables for all volunteers, weekly fresh food care packages are available for many area families from mid-June thru end of September. He'll describe how things got started and, most importantly, how the garden sustains year after year, how volunteers are cultivated and retained, as well as the nuts and bolts behind the garden's administration and organization.
As part of the event, we will be collecting donations towards a project at the Bethany Community Garden to honor the memory of Treena Kerr, beloved wife of Graham Kerr (the Galloping Gourmet), who has been a staunch and active supporter of the Growing Groceries program since its inception many years ago. Kerr describes Dr. Anderson, whom he meets with once a month, as his "gardening mentor and a grand guy."
