The agreement reached at the Round Table between the democratic opposition and the communist authorities led to the legalizing of Solidarity movement and holding the first free general election since World War II. It turned out to have been the commencement of political, economic and social shifts no one had been able to foresee. The situation forced the former opposition to take charge of rebuilding the economically devastated state which inevitably led to loosing public support. The year 1989 was a thrilling time, a time when the Poles confronted a new and unknown reality. The "1989" documentary is an author's look on the transition triggered by the Round Table. Michał Bielawski's film portrays the morale of the people in that period with the use of both official and underground archival footage, photographs and eyewitness accounts.
Porozumienie opozycji solidarnościowej z komunistami przy Okrągłym Stole doprowadziło do legalizacji Solidarności i do demokratycznych wyborów, pierwszych od zakończenia II Wojny Światowej. Okazało się początkiem przemian politycznych, gospodarczych i społecznych, których chwilę wcześniej nikt nie był w stanie przewidzieć. Zmusiło opozycję do wzięcia odpowiedzialności za odbudowę zrujnowanego kraju i skazało na stopniową utratę społecznego poparcia. Rok 1989 to emocjonujący moment konfrontacji Polaków z nową, nieznaną rzeczywistością. 1989" jest autorskim spojrzeniem na przemiany roku Okrągłego Stołu. Film Michała Bielawskiego relacjonuje stan ducha Polaków tego burzliwego okresu przy pomocy oficjalnych i podziemnych archiwaliów, fotografii i zapisków obserwatorów zdarzeń.

An intimate, creative and very immensely visual documentary where couple of stories weave into one narrative during in one night. In a big city, many people are joined in one need - troubled by loneliness, they want to talk to someone. Some of them call an emergency number 112, even if it's not really necessary, others call the radio. This time the subject of the broadcast is the end of the world predicted by the Mayan calendar. The speaker asks the listeners what it actually means to each one of them. They talk about things that are tragic and painful, and sometimes small and funny. Their need to be heard, to communicate, to share their experience with someone else is evident and moving. The radio is a motif linking this night's events - we hear it in the ambulance, in a city's monitoring center, where we observe the night life of the city presented on dozens of screens. The radio binds the elements of the film together in terms of structure and meaning: it is the source of the most important questions.
Kameralny, autorski film dokumentalny, w którym kilka historii spotyka się w czasie jednej nocy. W tę jedną noc, podobną do wielu innych, ludzie w dużym mieście, nękani samotnością, chcą z kimś porozmawiać. Niektórzy wzywają - często niepotrzebnie - pogotowie, jeszcze inni dzwonią do radia, gdzie prowadzący zadaje pytanie o koniec świata co on znaczy dla każdego z nas z osobna. Opowiadają o sprawach tragicznych, bolesnych, a czasem drobnych, wręcz zabawnych. Zauważalna i poruszająca jest ich wielka potrzeba rozmowy, bycia wysłuchanym, potrzeba bycia z kimś obok. Radio jest motywem łączącym ten nocny świat słyszymy je w karetce, w monitoringu miejskim, gdzie na dziesiątkach ekranów widzimy nocne życie miasta. Radio jest klamrą spajającą film oraz źródłem najważniejszych pytań.
