33 Variations, a play by Moisés Kaufman (playwright of The Laramie Project), is inspired by Beethoven's famous piano work, the Diabelli Variations, thirty-three masterful variations on an otherwise unremarkable waltz. 33 Variations simultaneously examines Beethoven's creative process and musicologist Katherine Brandt's quest to discover why Beethoven was compelled to explore a simple tune in such depth and complexity. The play explores parallels between Beethoven's progressive hearing loss and Katherine's amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). As Katherine struggles with her illness, she also struggles to repair her relationship with her daughter Clara.
33 Variations is a play about a mother coming to terms with her daughter and a composer coming to terms with his genius. And, even though they're separated by 200 years, these two people share an obsession that might, even just for a moment, make time stand still. Drama, memory and music combine to transport you from present-day New York to nineteenth-century Austria in this extraordinary American play about passion, parenthood and the moments of beauty that can transform a life.
