Brahms-Paganini Variations Books I & II
Brahms-Paganini Variations Books I & II
Upon meeting the great piano virtuoso Carl Tausig, Johannes Brahms is inspired to write two sets of fourteen variations, based on a theme by famous Italian virtuoso violinist Niccolò Pagnini. The listener will get a glimpse into Brahms' unique brand of piano virtuosity in these pieces, performed by pianist Hsia-Jung Chang.
Piano Lunch Series is a mini noonday series designed for audiences who might like to attend a short concert during their lunch hour. It is presented by piano geeks and often features intense and or esoteric repertoire.
Hsia-Jung Chang Bio:
Pianist Hsia-Jung Chang is equally at home performing Chopin Etudes on a Viennese 1828 Graf piano, as she is playing Carman Moore's Mystery of Tao on synthesizer. Chang has recorded close to 60 works by Frédéric Chopin.  Her recording of Chopin: Complete Préludes, recorded on a rebuilt 1907 Pleyel piano, has generated a lot of interest worldwide. It was showcased on Reflections from the Keyboard with David Dubal on WQXR, KPBX, CBC radio program As It Happens, WJFF and WKCR radio interviews, and numerous other radio stations.  Chang's improvisation album, Inside the Piano  21st Century Improvisations, makes use of the piano in unconventional ways, producing sublime as well as harrowing soundscapes using the strings and resonating surfaces inside the piano. This innovative recording has become a favorite of Experimental DJ's across the country. It was featured in an hour-long interview as part of the New York Alive series on WKCR. Chang's latest recording features the piano works of Claude Debussy. Critic Marvin J. Ward of CVNC writes, "Hsia-Jung Chang channels Debussy. . . this recording easily places itself among the best interpretations, those that serve as benchmarks for Debussy's sound world..."  All of Mandala Studio's recordings are available on CDBaby.com and on iTunes.  All of Chang's recordings are available on the Mandala Studio label on CDBaby.com and on iTunes.
