Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema: Book reception party and illustrated lecture by co-author/designer Jonathon Rosen
Date: Monday, October 5th
Time: 8pm
Admission: $5
Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215 Brooklyn

From the very beginnings of motion pictures, early filmmakers used color to deliver spectacular and hallucinatory effects for trick movies, horror, science fiction and fantasy, drama, travelogues, comedy and more. In this visually stunning book, Tom Gunning, Josh Yumibe, Giovanna Fossati, and Jonathon Rosen present a large scale monumental treasure trove of early hand colored film images, scanned directly from rare nitrate films (c.1896-1915) from the archives of EYE Film Institute Netherlands. Bringing to life their rich hues and forgotten splendor, Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema displays the full chromatic spectrum of tones and colors of the original films.

Co-author/designer Jonathon Rosen will present an illustrated lecture discussing the original processes behind the making of the films, (including brief excerpts) and also of producing the book, with a special focus on his visually hedonistic essay "Gluttonous Visual Overdose."

Jonathon Rosen is painter, illustrator, animator, and faculty member of the MFA Visual
Narrative and Illustration/Cartooning departments at The School of Visual Arts in New
York. The merging of humans and machines permeates his work and aesthetics. His artist books Intestinal fortitude (Poote Press, 1990) and The Birth of Machine Consciousness (Le Dernier Cri 2003) are in the permanent collection of the New York Metropolitan Museum. He was responsible for the Ichabod Crane drawings in Tim Burton's film Sleepy Hollow. Solo and group exhibitions include La Luz de Jesus (Los Angeles, CA), MoMA PS 1 (Long Island City, Queens), and Kunst-Werke (Berlin). Commissioned art clients include The New York Times, Hopital Brut, Rolling Stone, Time and MIT Press. Animation/video-mix performance venues include the Redcat Theater for the Los Angeles MO CA exhibition Visual Music with composer Tom Recchion.
