Jordan Marsh: Boston's First Department Store
Join us for a special "sneak peek" of the upcoming book on Boston's first department store by author and historian Anthony Mitchell Sammarco. Founded in 1851 by Eben Dyer Jordan and Benjamin L. Marsh, Jordan Marsh later moved to Washington Street where, in a 5-story store designed by Winslow & Wetherell, the transformative concept of "department shopping" was unveiled. The author will share recollections from Jordan Marsh employees and shoppers, and memorabilia from his extensive archive of Jordan Marsh-related photographs, advertisements and postcards, documenting the store's colorful history. From the late 19th century on, Jordan Marsh offered its customers a selection of goods including clothing, furs, furniture, children's toys, and carpetsalong with easy credit, art exhibitions, musical performances, and the adage that "the customer is always right."
