FILM: Just an Ordinary Jew
Jewish Community Center Houston, TX
Presented in cooperation with the Houston Jewish Film Festival. Post-film program features Consul General Rainer Munzel of the German Consulate General Houston.
When Hamburg journalist Emanuel Goldfarb is invited to visit a social studies class to discuss his life as a Jew born in post-war Germany, he is inspired to compose a letter of refusal that becomes a one-man debate on the modern German-Jewish relationship. In this darkly humorous tour de force, Goldfarb confronts himself, his place in society, his entire past, and his country, struggling to articulate the subtle and not-so-subtle attitudes that continue to mark German Jews as "others". He focuses his razor-sharp intellect inward, dissecting his own shortcomings as he strives to not only become "an ordinary German" but just as importantly, "an ordinary Jew". JUST AN ORDINARY JEW is a dramatic follow-up for Oliver Hirschbiegel, the Academy Award-nominated director of DOWNFALL.
