Low Light Photography at Antoinette Hatfield Hall and the Portland Art Museum
Shoot. Learn. Enjoy Portland.
Learn how to take incredible images in low light situations, with and without flash. This photo tour will teach you how to cope with unique lighting situations and work with existing low light. Perfect for beginner to advanced hobbyist.
F stops and shutter speeds, depth of field, white balance, ISO, composition and perspective are also covered. There will be a 30 min lesson in the lobby of the Antoinette Hatfield Hall before heading out to practice what you've learned at the Portland Art Museum. We will also practice a technique called "slow shutter sync" at Antoinette Hatfield Hall, teaching you how to take awesome snapshots in low light WITH a flash.
EQUIPMENT Any DSLR or digital point and shoot camera with adjustable shutter speeds and apertures required. Bring any lenses or lens hoods you may have - wide, standard, or telephoto, especially any "fast" lenses (F1.4 - F2.8). No tripods.
COST $50 per person. Price does not include admission to the Portland Art Museum. You will need to pay a $15 admission fee to the Art Museum.
Children under 18 must be accompanied by a paid and registered adult.
MEETING TIME Meet in the lobby of Antoinette Hatfield Hall, 1111 SW Broadway Portland, OR 97205. The entrance is on Main Street. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time.
PREPARING FOR YOUR SAFARI - REQUIRED! Please bring your camera manuals. If you don't have your manual, typically you can print it out from your manufacturer's website (or bring it on your mobile phone or kindle, if it's too long to print.)
Prior to your safari and with the aid of your manual, locate the below controls. The safari will not cover locating these controls on your camera. We will be learning how to use them. Please note: your camera may not have all these controls.

WHAT TO BRING DSLR or digital point and shoot camera with adjustable shutter speeds and apertures required.
Fully charged batteries and backups, enough for 2.5 hours of shooting.
Enough memory cards for 300 images
Good walking shoes and proper attire for the weather- hooded raincoat, waterproof shoes, wind breaker, etc.
Any lenses or lens hoods you may have - wide, standard, or telephoto. Bring a lens cloth if you have it.
Camera manual (if you cannot identify the above listed controls)
Pocket size notepad and pen for taking notes (your phone works too!. Handouts will not be given out. Mini tripod, such as a gorilla pod might come in handy at times, but it is not required. No full tripods or additional equipment that is not listed.
External flash for your DSLR if you have it, but it is not required.

CANCELLATIONS If you purchased your ticket via Brown Paper Tickets, our online ordering system, refunds are available for 12 hours from the time of purchase or until the ticket sales end, whichever comes first. Please see the order confirmation email sent to you by Brown Paper Tickets for details.
RESCHEDULING After 12 hours, there are no refunds, cancellations, rescheduling or exchanging. Because spots are limited, canceling and/or rescheduling leaves open spots that could have been filled by others. Thank you for your understanding. Portland Photo Tour operates under a similar canceling and/or rescheduling policy as other ticketing agencies with limited space available. Thank you for your understanding.
RAIN/WEATHER Photo Tours are rain or shine. You will be given tips for shooting in the rain should it occur. Photo Tours are only canceled under extreme weather conditions and according to the discretion of the instructor. Photo Tours are not canceled in advance, so please arrive as scheduled. On the rare occasion that a photo tour is canceled, you will receive a credit to participate in another photo tour of your choice of equal or lesser value.
WAIVER All Portland Photo Safari participants are required to sign a waiver/release of liability prior to attending, stating that Portland Photo Safari is not responsible for any injury (or loss of property) while attending.
LOST OR LATE? If you need to reach Jennifer on the day of your safari, please call 503.816.0937. Jennifer will not be answering the phone 20 minutes after the meeting time (5 minutes after the start time), since she will be teaching by then. If you are lost or late, please call within 20 minutes of the scheduled meeting time.
